February 2009

Our tango and swing guest instructors return in March.  This month, each workshop will be followed by a two hour practice party.

Tango  March 21st  5pm

Leroy “T Mambo Jazz” Tyree gives us another “bite of the elephant”.  He starts with the basics; if you are new to tango, it isn’t too late to join us.  If you are an experienced dancer, this is a great review of the fundamentals.  A practica from 7 to 9pm will give you a chance to practice what you’ve learned.
[2 hours, $27 in advance or $30 at the door]

Swing  March 28th  5pm 4pm

Carl Linder and Karrie Willis will return for another swing workshop.  They have long been popular instructors at Frankie’s Blue Room and other venues.  Like Tyree, they have a smooth, comfortable dancing style and great sensitivity to the music.  We’ll have a party afterwards, with swing music plus other dance music, depending on dancers’ interest. Because of the Swinger’s Ball at the Willowbrook, we will not have a dance party on the 28th.
[2 hours, $30 in advance or $35 at the door]

Looking a little farther ahead, Pamm’s own teacher, Mary Hoedeman, will return the first second weekend of May with both workshops & private lessons.

For more information, call us at 630-717-9930, Monday through Friday, between 4:30 and 9:30 pm.

You can save a few dollars by registering in advance for either workshop on our Events page here.

We are looking for a daycare provider – part time, hours variable. For information call the studio (630-717-9930).

Jon will be teaching a West Coast Swing class on Wednesdays at 7:30pm starting next week (2/25/09).  It will be an eight-week long class teaching us a complete routine to perform at the studio showcase in April.

The cost is $115 for eight weeks of choreography plus one final week practice party and styling tips for presentation.  If you would like to join the class, please email Jon at cjonsqqss@yahoo.com, or leave a message at 630-717-9930.

Jon also has a hustle class planned for Thursdays at 7pm starting March 5th.

Pamm is going to teach a drop-in dance class every weekday afternoon from 5 to 6 pm, starting February 23rd.  We teach a lot of dances here at Two Left Feet, and this class will give you a chance to try almost all of them.  The ones we are planning to teach are listed below, with the days we are planning to teach them.  To confirm the schedule for a particular day, you can us at 630-717-9930.  The cost is just $8 per class.

Friend of the studio Peggy R. sent us this report on one of the health benefits of dancing:

Medicine & Health

A Mexican study finds ballroom dancing can give as good an aerobic workout as more conventional forms of exercise. Dr. Hermes Ilarraza of the National Institute of Cardiology reported on his findings to the World Congress of Cardiology in Barcelona, Spain, the Daily Mail said.

“The benefits of physical training in patients with heart disease is well established,” he said. “However, exercise compliance is often inadequate because patients find exercise boring. People like to dance so we thought it would be an attractive option.” Ilarraza tracked a group of 40 heart disease patients. All the patients committed to doing half an hour of exercise a day five days a week for five weeks, the Daily Mail said.

Half got their exercise from a dance routine choreographed by a professional dancer who also had heart disease, while the others exercised on stationary bicycles.

Ilarraza found that the dance group’s exercise capacity increased by 28 percent, almost as much as the 31 percent increase for the cycling group.
